On the 17th of June to the 8th of July, I took part in a Japanese exchange programme. This is something I will never forget. I never realised what an amazing culturally different period of time I would experience. From this experience I would recommend everyone pay a visit at some point in their life.

I can’t describe what I enjoyed the most. Everyone just wanted to speak to me and practise their English. During my stay in Japan, I personally feel like I have achieved a better listening ability, and more Japanese vocabulary to help with speaking. Also linking to the subject of spoken Japanese, confused as to why the language they speak is different to how we have been taught, but then I realised it is close to being similar, as everything is shortened.

Japan is almost like another planet, as the culture and way of life is completely different to our own. Japanese people are very family orientated, and therefore spend a lot of time together in the evenings and at weekends. Whereas our culture, we as teenagers prefer to be out with our friends. Temples and hot springs are another sign of different culture, there are lots of temples dotted around the country. Japan is a very religious country.

The country is also different because the majority of things there are ‘kawaii’, meaning cute. This word is used a lot compared to the words we use to describe something. Staying with a Japanese family was an amazing opportunity. I will never forget. It gives you the experience from a Japanese person’s daily life, not just visiting for a holiday. The people are also very polite and caring, making you feel at home as one of their family members.

When my stay in Japan came to an end, it grew to the point, where I didn't want to leave. Therefore, it was very emotional at Fukuoka airport. My friend and I wore a yukata all the way home, receiving many strange looks, photographs being taken and questions. It was very interesting.

Currently I am hosting a Japanese student from the university I visited, most students have made her feel involved and happy to be a student at our college for a short period of time.
Again I will never forget this experience.
